John Elders was a teacher at RGS from 1957 to 1982 and played club rugby at our club. In 1972 he coached England to two famous victories over South Africa and New Zealand. Sadly he passed away in 2015 and we now play this fixture in his memory.
It had taken some time to get this side together but I hope it will be an enjoyable match. We will see what the youth coaches have produced in recent years - looks a cracking squad.
Ben Jubb will lead the side - a great player and a great bloke and he will have plenty of his mates around him.
We will have a few boys playing for both sides as the likes of George Waterhouse, Miles Gittins, Henry Schmid and Freddie Nickalls for example will don both playing tops during the game.
The starting side will consist of three sets of brothers as Oli and Alex Taylor will play in the second row together. In addition, Sion and Dylan Gittins will play in the back whilst Jamie and Sam Ogilvie will play 10 and 15. Great for the families to see their boys play together.
It will be great to see the big lad Ryan Gibson in a Novos shirt as he is yet to make his senior debut for Novos. Unfortunately, the Poly first teamer has not had an opportunity to play for his local club.
I am also looking forward to seeing Ben Jubb play alongside Jack Hearn in the centres. May struggle to name a better partnership that I have coached in the centres.
Going to be an exciting day to see over 30 young local lads try gel together but it could be a look into our future. With one or two making a life down south the majority of the lads will hopefully return to the club once their uni studies are finished.
So get down and share a moment with your rugby mates over the festive period and witness the fruits of our youth coaches labour.
Going to be a great day - Up the Vos
